Newborn Check Ups
Having a newborn baby it’s supposed to be a happy and enjoyable experience, Yet sometimes this is not the case. We understand the struggles that new parents face. Questions and worries come up quite often and, it is not always easy to know what is “Normal.” That’s why we take a holistic approach to newborn care.
- What is the difference between spit up and vomiting?
- What is the difference between constipation and normal bowel movement frequency?
- Is the baby having a reaction to the milk or formula?
- Does the baby need to drink any water when it is hot outside?
- How do I know my baby is developing normally?
These are just some of the common questions we hear from parents, both new and experienced. Knowing that parents often have many questions and concerns, we schedule 60 minutes for the first visit. Often times some reassurance is all that is necessary that the child is developing normally and there are no major medical problems.
The typical well baby check-up schedule in the first year includes eight visits
- 3-5 days after discharge
- 2 weeks old
- 1 month old
- 2 months old
- 4 months old
- 6 months old
- 9 months old
- 12 months old
These visits are vital because milestones are checked to make sure the baby is developing normally. The baby’s weight, length, and head circumference are measured at each visit to make sure the baby is getting enough to eat and there are no problems with growth or organ function. If any abnormalities are found, tests may be ordered or of the family may be referred to the Arizona Early Intervention Program (AzEIP). If the mother chooses to breast-feed, a referral may be placed to a lactation consultant or certain herbs recommended to support milk supply and breast health.
